Broadband Connection Reaches the South Pole
“Now we’re transmitting 15 gigs per day, and every room has a data port with Ethernet service,” says Pat Smith, manager of technology development for Antarctic infrastructures and logistics at the National Science Foundation. In 2005, the phones were upgraded to voice over IP. Back in 1985, the rate was a meager 200 kilobytes per day.

Russian vodka maker buys Vodka.com for $3 mln
The billionaire Russian entrepreneur behind Russia’s biggest vodka maker has paid US$3 million to acquire the vodka.com domain, part of a bid to expand into the U.S. market. This just goes to show how much these domains names are worth.
World’s First Cloned Cat Has Kittens
The world’s first cloned cat just became a mother – and she even did it without test tubes. Copy Cat, who was cloned by Texas A&M University researchers in 2001, had three kittens in September. Mother and kittens are doing well, said Duane Kraemer, an A&M veterinary medicine professor who helped clone her and has been taking care of her.

Bill Gates On The Future Of DRM
Gates confessed to a round table of prominent bloggers that “no one has done it right” when it comes to Digital Rights Management. This is despite Microsoft recently creating yet another DRM format for it’s new Zune MP3 player.
Gates went on to say Digital Rights Management “causes too much pain for legitimate buyers” trying to distinguish between legal and illegal uses. He declined to elaborate on how Microsoft would address this.
Well, at least Bill gets it. Now, lets hope that the record and movie industries get it, and that one day soon we can have an open, level playing field where buying music and video is someone we all want to do, rather than something we have to do.

Robot dragonfly.
This is video of whats purported to be the worlds first flapping wing robot. Apparently its being designed by the same guys that brought us the robo sapien, so perhaps next year we’ll all be getting nagged by our kids to buy one of these for Christmas.
Apprently after recharging it by connecting it to the controller, you can fly it around for around 15 minutes. Stay tuned for more, apparently there is also talk of a robotic spider….
British queen to podcast Christmas message to the Commonwealth
Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II is to podcast her traditional Christmas message to the Commonwealth for the first time, Buckingham Palace said Thursday.
Keeping abreast with the latest technology, the iPod-owning monarch’s festive broadcast will be available to download from the royal family’s website on Christmas Day.
Listeners who subscribe to the podcast in advance will automatically receive the recording at 1500 GMT on Monday. You can do that by visiting the royal website at http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/Page5323.asp
